It’s time to rise and shine and prepare for another workday. Like many of us, if you have an office job, you will spend an average of 13 hours sitting throughout the day.

Why should we care about sitting so much? Well as it turns out, the more we sit the less healthy we are. According to a study reported in the NY Times, “every single hour of television watched after the age of 25 reduces the viewer’s life expectancy by 21.8 minutes.” Substitute television with a computer screen and it seems we all should be carefully considering the impact this has on our lives.

Why is sitting so harmful? The human body is a dynamic system that requires physical input to stimulate it. Large lower body muscle groups are essentially unused when we sit. Standing activates our muscles, helping us balance and stay upright. A sedentary lifestyle contributes to the development of disease. The sitting body then requires less energy and utilizes less “fuel.” Think of that bagel and cream cheese you had for breakfast or the burrito you ate at lunch. When we stand, we burn calories, improve our muscle tone, increase blood flow and increase our metabolism. Standing is the easiest change we can make to live a healthier life.

So, here at Archer, we took a look at our team member’s workstations and asked if they would like to spend a portion of their workday standing. There was a resounding “yes!” So as part of our ongoing mission to create demand for your brand, we have begun to replace ordinary workstations with standing desks, and the outcome has been great. Just listen to one of our interactive designers, Brittani, who says she she finds she is more productive and focused when on her feet in the office. “Standing enables me to feel more awake and seems to promote greater creativity,” she explains. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our work, and standing desks have been a productive, and healthy, step in that direction.
