Facebook Reaches 350 Million Users and Changes Privacy Model
Last night Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, wrote an open letter to the Facebook community addressing the growing demand for privacy control. Facebook privacy has been centered around “groups” of schools or companies, as well as regional networks like “Rochester.” Many regional networks have grown to millions of members, which has a created a demand for a more robust way of controlling privacy.
In order to meet this need, Facebook has built some new tools. Now users will be able to control who sees each piece of content you publish or upload. I am sure there will be thousands of teens rejoicing now that they can easily screen the growing number of parents joining Facebook every day!
Zuckerberg’s letter also mentioned that Facebook has grown to 350 million users. It has added 100 million users in just the past six months. This number is absolutely amazing! Facebook has grown far beyond any of its competitors including the dying MySpace.
If you want to take anything away from this announcement, it should be that Facebook is King and will be for quite some time. Their success is a direct result of their ability to addresses the needs of the community it serves. If your agency or client has yet to consider joining Facebook, the reasons to keep saying no are becoming less valid.
